In Organic Farming Farmers Life Really will Sustain
Macario Castillote is forty six (46) years old, the point person on one of the cluster commodities for the Philippine Food Facility (PFF) project in the municipality of Sultan Naga Dimaporo, married to Annalie Balanay blessed with three siblings of two boys and a girl. He was born to a farmer family that even before his marriage he already was helping his parents cultivating their small farm lands. Life of the coconut farmer is not that easy since they only will income once in three months after they could harvest the old coconut fruit that will be processed into copra.
With three siblings to raise Macario continued to think of every possible means to earn his leaving. There is that he planted different crops under the coconut trees in the farmland which his parents lend to him. He tried corn but with high input on commercial fertilizer but little produce he ceased to corn production and planted high value tomato and bell pepper again using the commercial fertilizer. With the very low income he stops the undercropping activity and tried to do the coconut charcoal business, due to competition and high cost the business was not sustained.

Farmers effective fighters against poverty?

On August 27, 2010, the Provincial Council of PASAKA, Inc. conducted their meeting at the organizations provincial center at Maigo, Lanao del Norte. Forty one (41) regular members (local chapter chairpersons) from different chapters came to attend the regular activity. Organizational reporting and Updating of the current set-up especially on Farmers for Food Program (FFP) with the European Union project implementation were discussed with several issues and concerns resolved and given necessary attention to strengthen the local organization and smoothly achieve the goals to contribute in eliminating poverty within the sector.
Farming is a serious business

Constancio Putol, Jr or Bonato or Junjun as everybody call him is the youngest of the four siblings of Mrs. Erlita and Mr Constancio Putol,Sr. He is 26 years old a high graduate, single and is acting as the right hand of his father in attending their coconut and little rice farm. Though he is the youngest in the family but Bonato sees to it that they have enough food in the table and money to sustain the family needs. Bonato is the PFFs pilot commodity cluster head that together with his farmer colleagues implementing the on site demonstration farm with inputs of vermiworms for vermin/casts production, chicken for egg production and laying and among others.

With so many activities in the farm, in the organization and handi-craft shop, two young farmers were relieved from the hard days work and attended the Training on Entrepreneurial Competency-Need to Improve Competitiveness (TECNIC). Together with several APFTI members who also are Small and Medium Entrepreneurs (SMEs) of Northern Mindanao Maricel Sande of San Isidro Upper Young Farmers Group and Julieta Alfine Ocampos of Poblacion Kolambugan young farmers group participated the activity.
